In the back room of a dim North London pub WJ caught up with one of the capital’s most aspiring new bands, The High Arts, for a chat about dressing up, making music and some serious partying.
Pete, Matthew, Rich and Dan may have only been a complete line up for a short while but they are already proving that a new post punk revival is beginning to rear it’s head from the small venues of London’s live music circuit...

BATTERY IN YOUR LEG

It’s not often that I would be moved to write about a new band on the strength of a one-track demo, but these guys have something both fresh and distinctly retro. They sound like a late sixties garage band that somehow got dipped into a vat of the more intelligent parts of new wave before drying out via the Manchester scene. These lads from London certainly have the IT factor! The sound is in your face but manages to be delivered with subtlety.

I kind of defy you not to sing along to this first track from their upcoming album, the delightfully named Conversations From A Public House. Even that title has a retro feel, as those conversations seem to be a dying art in these days of social networking. Alright, that’s enough social commentary from me, check out the tune and go befriend them as they are a band who are getting a bit of a buzz behind them right now.

The High Arts have the wit, style and cool delivery of 60s Stones as their point of departure and this shiny rocket flies very well indeed. Prime rockin' Beatles too, it's that raw pop imbued rnb also seen in The Flamin' Groovies, The Kinks and more recently Brian Jonestown- but I'd venture that these guys are far better than them yanx...
